Watercolor & Acrylic Painting -Florence & the Cinque Terre

June 20, 2020 - June 27, 2020

This will be a week of painting in watercolor or acrylic with a little bit of collage tossed in. Lynn’s workshop will be familiar and fun. The twist is that we’ll spend the first 2 nights in the heart of the Renaissance – Florence. Then we’ll move to the magical Cinque Terre along the Ligurian Coast for 5 nights.

Since the 1400’s artists from everywhere in the world have made pilgrimages to Florence to study the works of the masters and breathe in the excitement of her beehive of streets and alleys. While there, we’ll paint in the garden of our beautiful villa Michelangiolo, visit one of the museum treasures of this great city of art and paint on location along the Arno, in the piazzas and formal gardens.

After the dazzle of Florence, a private coach will pick us up at our hotel and transfer us north to the seaside region of the Cinque Terre. In June this area will be buzzing with tourists in high season, but we’ll stay out of the fray at a family-run hotel (reserved exclusively for us) on the cliffs above the main town of Monterosso.

The terrace and garden overlooking the sea and the town will be our studio. We can settle in to paint, descending to explore the towns as we choose in our private shuttle.

Our personal escort and guide, Jim Cachey, will coordinate various excursions into the other towns so we get a good taste of the charm of these towns: the scenic harbor of Vernazza, cafe Nessun’ Dorma perched on a cliff above Manarola, cappuccino with vistas in Rio Maggiore and a private boat to explore some smaller coves. We’ll move from town to town on trains, by boat (weather permitting) or – for the intrepid – hiking over the mountainside from one harbor to the next.

This is a great workshop for beginners as well as experienced artists. Lynn will teach you step by step techniques that guarantee to bring out the creative side in each of you while you take in the incredible beauty and culture in this part of Italy.

Additional Activities: Our daily painting will be combined with other adventures such as:

  • museum visit in Florence
  • train pass to visit other towns (Vernazza, Riomaggiore, Manarola and Corniglia)
  • boat trip to sketch or photograph from the sea
  • free shuttle service from the hotel to the main town
  • pick up/return to Florence

The Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. “The Five Lands” comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Paths, trains, and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Food – We will have 6 dinners organized together at local restaurants and trattorie in Florence and Monterosso-al-Mare. We’ll sample the pastas, seafood, and specialties of each area. Local wine is included with all dinners. Lunches and 1 dinner will be independent for you to explore the local cuisine on your own.

In Florence we’ll find local Tuscan cuisine, based on olive oil, meats, legumes and salami. Once we get to the Cinque Terre, however, that will change. Given its location on the Mediterranean, seafood is plentiful in the local cuisine. Anchovies of Monterosso are a local specialty designated with a Protected Designation of Origin status from the European Union. The mountainsides of the Cinque Terre are heavily terraced and are used to cultivate grapes and olives. This area, and the region of Liguria, as a whole, is known for pesto — a sauce made from basil leaves, garlic, salt, olive oil, pine nuts and pecorino cheese. Focaccia is a particularly common locally baked bread product. Farinata is also a typical snack found in bakeries and pizzerias — essentially it is a savory and crunchy pancake made from a base of chickpea flour.
